ARIST to Cease Publication Following 2011 Volume
The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) and Information Today, Inc. have announced that the prestigious Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (ARIST) will cease publication following the release of Volume 45 (2011). As the hardcover series ends its 45-year run, shorter, tightly focused review articles will begin appearing in The Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), also published by ASIS&T.
ARIST has a long and proud history, from its debut in 1966 with Carlos Cuadra as editor and supported by the Systems Development Corporation and the National Science Foundation, Office of Science Information Service, through 20+ volumes edited by Martha E. Williams, to the 10 most recent volumes edited by Blaise Cronin and Debora Shaw, from 2001 to 2011. Information Today, Inc. has published the series on behalf of ASIS&T since 1991, Volume 26.
“This was an agonizing decision by the ASIS&T Publications Strategic Planning Committee and the board, especially since Information Today, Inc. was willing to continue,” said Gary Marchionini, ASIS&T President. “The emotional and intellectual attachment to a printed ARIST was outweighed by a consensus of where scholarly communication is going and by the desire for instant online access by readers and authors. Once the ASIS&T Board accepted the future scenario for scholarly publishing and research, the decision followed to discontinue separate ARIST publication before the esteemed ARIST series was affected.”
JASIST Editor Blaise Cronin commented, “Having read ARIST for almost 30 years and edited it for the last 10, I am sad to see the serial come to an end, mindful of the author/reader shifts that led to the decision, and consequently very much committed to developing a high-quality review section in the pages of JASIST for ASIS&T members and others.”
ARIST Volumes 38 (2003) through 44 (2010) are available from Information Today, Inc. at http://books.infotoday.com/asist/, as will be Volume 45 beginning in Fall 2010. The working Table of Contents for Volume 45 can be viewed at http://www.asis.org/Publications/ARIST/vol45.php.
