Outcomes assessment and LIS education

Michelle Kazmer, Heidi Julien, John Bertot and Rae-Anne Montague

ASIS&T 2008 Annual Meeting (AM08 2008)
Columbus, Ohio, October 24-29, 2008

Summary

This panel presents three approaches to outcomes assessment and LIS education by having panelists talk about setting and measuring outcomes at three "levels": the individual course level, program level, and consortium level. At the individual course level, Heidi Julien, University of Alberta, will discuss outcomes assessment and using authentic assignments for assessing students' learning. At the program level, John Carlo Bertot, Florida State University, will talk about negotiating outcomes creation and measurement when various types of outside and inside organizations, such as accrediting bodies, require outcomes assessment. At the consortium level, Rae-Anne Montague, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will talk about how the Web-Based Information Science Education (WISE) Consortium has worked to improve the delivery of course content across institutions through alignment of outcomes and their assessment. All three speakers will identify problems, opportunities, and solutions, providing examples based in their specific experiences with outcomes assessment in LIS education.
